A parent on one of the Family islands reached out to me in frustration. Their child wanted to study physics, but there was no physics teacher available on the island. The student was motivated, the parent was supportive but the system simply couldn’t give them what they needed.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the only time something like this has happened.
We Understand the Challenge
Over the past 13 years building The Student Shed, I’ve worked directly with hundreds of parents and students across The Bahamas, and I’ve noticed the same pattern keeps popping up, especially in our homeschool and traditional school environments. Curriculum access, consistency in instruction, and tailored learning support are a challenge.
Let’s start with the homeschool scene.
Homeschooling in The Bahamas has grown tremendously, with parents choosing this path for various reasons such as religious values, learning differences, flexible scheduling, or simply a desire for a more personalized educational experience. However, despite the benefits, many parents feel overwhelmed when it comes to prepping for the national exams. Issues come up surrounding curriculum planning, and finding high-quality resources. They often ask, “What’s the best textbook for BJC Spanish?” or “Which resources should I use for BGCSE Biology?” but there’s rarely a single answer.
Parents have to juggle piecing together content from different platforms, while also trying to make sure their child is prepared for the national exams. It’s no wonder they feel burnt out.
On the other hand, students in traditional schools face a different, but equally frustrating issue, inconsistency. Some schools have fantastic teachers and strong subject support. Others especially in the Family Islands lack certified subject teachers. In both cases, the student is expected to perform the same on the national exams, regardless of what support they did or didn’t receive.
Another challenge that traditional schooled students face is keeping up with school work when days are missed because of travel, athletic events or sickness.
Why We Built These Courses
That’s why we created our self-paced BJC and BGCSE courses. Not to replace your child’s teacher or your homeschool curriculum, but to supplement them. These courses exist to help bridge the gap between the curriculum goals and the reality many students face.
Whether your child is homeschooled, in a traditional classroom, or somewhere in between, these courses are designed to give students the tools they need to review, catch up, and build confidence.
Each course is built around short, engaging videos, downloadable notes, and quizzes to reinforce key concepts. Students can jump to exactly what they need, whether they’re preparing for a topic they missed in class, reviewing for a big exam, or just brushing up on weak areas.
This is not about replacing your child’s main form of instruction, it’s about empowering students to take ownership of their learning.
Final Thoughts
We didn’t build these courses in theory, we built them from listening to parents like you. From seeing the gaps students face. From hearing stories like that parent on the Family island who simply wanted their child to have a chance.
So whether your child needs review, reinforcement, or a full-on curriculum, we hope these courses become a tool in your homeschool or after-school toolkit.
